Confined Water Skills Training can happen right in your own backyard — if your pool is too deep to stand in, we’ll come to you. Don’t have a suitable pool? No problem, we have several options to choose from in the area.
Once your eLearning and Confined Water Skills Training are complete, we head to Wheeler Branch Park in Glen Rose, Texas to complete your open water certification dives. Lake depth goes to 75 feet, and visibility ranges from 3’ to 20’ depending on conditions — we adjust each dive based on group size and visibility on the day.
The upside: if you can dive here, you can dive anywhere. Training in real lake conditions builds divers who are genuinely comfortable underwater.
It’s not just a place to check off skills — it’s a genuinely fun dive with something new to discover on every trip down.
Upon signup, you’ll receive an eLearning code. This covers all of the knowledge required to become a safe diver — broken into multiple sections, each with its own quiz, plus a final exam. eLearning is completed before we ever get in the water, and you can work through it at your own pace.
Confined Water training happens in a pool, where you’ll learn the required 24 skills of diving. For each skill, we first discuss it on the surface, then demonstrate it underwater so you can see exactly how it’s done. From there, the group performs the skill underwater while we watch and correct any issues. Along the way, we also share real-world dive stories to help the lessons stick. This generally takes 4–6 hours to complete, depending on proficiency.
Open Water training takes place at Wheeler Branch Park in Glen Rose. You’ll complete 4 open water dives over 2 days.
Once all of the above is complete, we process your information and your electronic certification is issued. Welcome to the diving community!
My diving story didn’t start with a certification — it started with a free pool session at a local dive shop back in high school, in San Diego, in 1975. I was hooked immediately, but getting certified back then still cost more than I could swing at the time, so diving went on hold.
That didn’t stop me from diving, though. Over the years, wherever travel took me, I’d find a local instructor and do a discovery dive — Hawaii, and everywhere else the opportunity came up. On what turned out to be my last discovery dive, in Hawaii, the instructor pulled me aside afterward and told me flat out that I was crazy to keep diving this way without being certified. She was right. I finally got certified in 2011 — and I was hooked all over again. A few years of chasing every certification I could get later, I became a Scuba Instructor in 2015.
I share all this because I know what it’s like to be curious about diving but not quite ready to commit — and what it’s like to finally take the leap. As a Scuba Instructor, Specialty Instructor, and Emergency First Responder Instructor, I’m committed to making sure every student feels safe, confident, and genuinely excited about diving, whether it takes you two months or forty years to get there.
Kim’s path into diving looked nothing like mine — and that’s exactly why having both of us as instructors works so well. She started diving in 2019, and in less than 18 months, she was already a certified Scuba Instructor herself. If you’re newer to the water or want an instructor who remembers exactly what it’s like to be a brand-new diver, Kim’s approach is patient, encouraging, and built around making sure you feel confident every step of the way.
Together, we run RAW Scuba as a husband-and-wife team — so however you learn best, one of us is a great fit for you. We both share a genuine passion for the underwater world and for teaching, and we travel to dive in destinations around the world together. Underwater photography is another shared passion of ours — you can see many of our photos on our Photos page or on Facebook under RAW Scuba Diving.
“This was the best decision I could have made when selecting scuba instructors. I choose to do a private training. They were responsive leading up to the pool and open water portions, accommodating with my schedule and most importantly patient and supportive instructors. I would absolutely use them again and highly recommend RAW Scuba for training.”
— Amy G., Dallas, TX
“I can’t recommend Bob and Kim with Raw Scuba enough for your scuba training needs. They made the entire process fun and incredibly easy. They are EXCELLENT instructors who will make you feel so comfortable during every aspect of training. I will definitely be using them for all of my certifications going forward. Anyone who wants to get out and get their certification, look no further than Raw Scuba. You will NOT regret it!”
— Katelin C., Fort Worth, TX
“RAW Scuba Diving school was the best! Our instructor Kim Macy was amazing. They offer private lessons. I recommend this RAW Scuba school to anyone who is going to take a dive trip and needs certification!”
